For those of you interested and would like to attend, the Board of Directors will have a meeting starting at 6:00 PM before each of the monthly meetings to allow for additional participation and or questions.

Change in General Meeting Schedule for 2012 & New Officers for Board

The Board of Directors has decided to implement a change for the General Meetings for 2012. Essentially we will hold General meetings every other month and on the alternate months we will have a work party at the hatchery for a few hours. We will provide a breakfast for all the volunteers starting at 8:00 am followed by a couple hours of work around the hatchery. The following is the schedule for work parties and General Meetings:
Work Parties (all Saturdays): Jan 14, Mar 10, May 12, Oct 13 & Dec 15
General Meetings(4th Wednesdays) Feb 22, Apr 25, Jun 27, Sept 26 & Nov 28
The BBQ and Auction this year will be held on Wednesday August 8th at the Edmonds Senior Center.

The newly elected officers for 2012 are:
President: Ray Crawford
Vice Pres: Larry Clure
Secretary: Judy Zimmerman
Treasurer: Gary McConaghy

Red Gold to be Presented at Next General Meeting November 16th

The Edmonds Chapter of Trout Unlimited will present the awardwinning documentary, RedGold -- the story of a massive mining development which could destroyBristol Bay, Alaska, home to the most pristine and productive Sockeyesalmon rivers in the world -- on Wednesday, November 16, 6:30 PM at the Edmonds Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave. in Edmonds, (just northof the ferry terminal).

The program -- open to the public -- will also feature DwayneMeadows, Trout Unlimited Outreach Director, who will discuss the urgent needfor awareness about Pebble Mine and its dire effect on an entireecosystem.

This beautiful region is home to the largest Sockeye runs in NorthAmerica, with 40 million returning to its waters each year. Meadows willexplain the national effort underway to prevent Pebble Mine from moving forward-- a move that would destroy these sustainable fish runs thatprovide subsistence and the livelihoods of thousands, including Washingtonresidents who depend on the clean waters of Bristol Bay and it’s upper estuaryhabitat in Alaska.

October 26th General Meeting

Our next General Meeting will be October 26th and our guest speaker this month will be Bob McChesney, the Executive Director Port of Edmonds. Bob will discuss and take questions on port activities, upcoming development plans and how the port and the hatchery will be able to work together to enhance our goals for the future.
The meeting will be @ 7:00 PM at South Snohomish County Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave. Edmonds, WA. We will also have a our regular raffle as well as tickets for a raffle from the Ballard Chapter for a $500 Steelhead rod. There will only be 100 total tickets sold at $5/ea so the chances are pretty good for this one. The drawing will be held on November 1, 2011.
For your information and planning for November, we will have Dwayne Meadows who is the Bristol Bay National Outreach Director to discuss the dispute regarding the mining proposal for the Bristol Bay System. The November meeting will be held on Wednesday November 16th because of the Thanksgiving Holiday. We will also be holding elections for the Board of Directors. Just a quick reminder about the BBQ/Raffle/Auction next week. Tickets are now available for the BBQ Raffle and Auction set for Wednesday Night August 10th starting at 6:00 pm with Dinner to begin at 6:30. Dinner will be catered this year by Larry's Smokehouse. The cost of the tickets is $20.00 per person (BYOB), soft drinks will be provided. The menu will consist of Smoked King Salmon, Smoked Pull Barbeque Pork, Lemon Chicken Breast, Homemade Creamy Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Cornbread and Corn on the Cob. We have several members who testify to the wonderful meal Larry serves up.

This is our biggest annual fundraiser, so if you have something that you would like to donate for either the raffle or auction please contact Gary for that as well. It does not need to be fish related to be put into the raffle or auction.

June 22nd General Meeting

Be sure to plan to attend this month's Edmonds Salmon Chapter meeting on Wednesday June 22nd. Our special presenter this month will be Bryan Depew, the Seafood Manager at the Millcreek Central Market. He will be bringing a large and small salmon along with a halibut to show all of us the best way to cut and prepare your own prized catches. As a bonus, the cut salmon and halibut will be added the other raffle pool items, so be sure to purchase extra tickets for a chance to take home some fresh fish.
We will also be serving a good 'ol summer dinner of hotdogs, chips and salad for your dining pleasure. Dinner will start at 6:30 and the presentation around 7:00 pm. The meeting will be in our regular meeting room at the South Snohomish County Senior Center, 122 Railroad Ave, Edmonds, WA.

Our Open House was a huge success this year, with the beautiful weather and the great attendance we were able to show off our Hatchery and have some youngsters catch their first trout. Thanks to all who volunteered to help out and to all of you who attended.

Fish have been realeased from the Imprint project at the Edmonds Pier, the last of the fry have been set free in North Creek, net pen removed and packed away for another year and the hatchery pond drained and cleaned. Thanks to everyone who helped with all the feeding, cleaning, fry planting and everything else that needs to get done.

The Edmonds Salmon Chapter Trout Unlimited will be celebrating their annual open house at the Willow Creek Fish Hatchery in conjunction with the 24th annual Edmonds Waterfront Festival. This will occur on Saturday June 4th and Sunday June 5th 2011 from 10am to 4pm. The hatchery is located at 95 Pine Street in Edmonds (NW corner of Pine Street and Hwy 104)

There will be shuttle busses from the Waterfront Festival will drop off and pickup people at the entrance to the Festival from 11am to 3pm on Saturday and Sunday. Last bus from the Hatchery is at 4pm.

This annual open house is for the whole family. Free trout fishing for kids 12 and under. The Edmonds Salmon Chapter members will clean the fish. Free coffee, popcorn, juice, and cookies will be available. Tours of the fish hatchery will be available. Bring the family to the Willow Creek Fish Hatchery and see why the Edmonds Salmon Chapter was awarded the Washington State 2002 and 2009 Trout Unlimited Aquatic Education Award.

The April 27th General Meeting promises to be one not to be missed. Our featured Speaker will be Toby Black, who is our resident Washington Dept of Fisheries Test Fisherman. This means that Toby is out on the waters everyday trying different methods, systems and areas to fish trying to determine the who, what, where and why the fish do what they do. His talk will begin at 7:00, but not to be missed before that will be a complimentary BBQ dinner per the poster below. We will also be featuring a 50% off all our old logo gear per the info below and that's a steal.

The March 23rd General Meeting will feature a presentation by Kyle Wagoner of Kyle's Outdoor Adventure Guide service. Kyle will discuss all forms of fishing from his experience on the Puget Sound, Straits of Juan De Fuca, Columbia and Cowlitz Rivers to name a few. Net Pen Launched for 2011

Thank you to everyone who showed up to launch the net pen for this year. We had a good turnout and it
went to together very smoothly. Ray Crawford did a bunch of work on it on the off-season so the
walk-around decking is pretty secure now. The fish will be put into the net pen on February 16th..I will post a time if you would like to come see the process in the Edmonds Marina.

Benefit Dinner at the Burke Museum

Trout Unlimited is proud to be a part of an upcoming celebration of the Tongass National Forest and award-winning photographer Amy Gulick's exhibit and book, Salmon in the Trees: Life in Alaska's Tongass Rain Forest. This unique event will take place Tuesday November 16 at the Burke Museum in Seattle from 6:30 - 8:30pm. Chefs Kevin Davis of Blueacre Seafood and Anthony Polizzi of Steelhead Diner will prepare a delicious seafood feast, which will include oysters, wild salmon, Dungeness crab, spot prawns and more. We started off the new year with a great presentation by Leland Miyawaki discussing his methods and locations of saltwater fly fishing. There were a couple lucky winners in the group that won one of his "poppers" to use next time they go out fishing. We hope everyone enjoyed the evening and that you'll come back for the next meeting on October 27th. Our next general meeting will feature Leland Miyawaki, the Orvis Bellevue Fly Fishing Manager. Leland fishes and guides on the local Puget Sound beaches for searun cutthroat and salmon with surface fly exclusively- the "Miyawaki Beach Popper". He has fished most of the streams and lakes of California, Oregon, Washington, the well-known hotspots in New Mexico, Wyoming and Montana and the great steelhead rivers of British Columbia. Leland will tie flies for the meeting and raffle. It should be a great presentation and just in time for the fall fishing season.

Hope everyone's summer is going well and you've had a chance to get out on the water for some Salmon fishing and crabbing. Have heard that the fish that are being caught are larger than we have seen lately. Looking forward to some fishing reports on Wednesday Night at the BBQ. The BBQ will be at the Willow Creek Hatchery starting at 5:00 PM. We will be making burgers and hot dogs with all the fixins. Hope you will all plan to attend to catch up with old friends, hopefully make some new ones and to check out the beautiful grounds and the new demonstration garden.
The next general meeting will be on Wednesday night Sept 22nd, with our guest speaker Leland Miyawaki, the Orvis Bellevue Fly Fishing Manager, who will tell us all about Salt Water Fly fishing. Hope to see a big turnout for this one.

Open House this Weekend

We will be holding our annual Open House and Kid's Fishing Pond as part of the Edmond's Waterfront Festival. Everyone is encouraged to come down to the hatchery this weekend with the kids for a fun weekend event. We will have a fishing pond set up for the young kids to try their luck. Everyone will also be able to tour the hatchery to see what we have been up to for the past year. We will have popcorn and treats as well.

May General Meeting and June Open House

Please plan to attend the Edmonds Salmon Chapter Trout Unlimited meeting this Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM. The speaker for this gathering will be Ron Wendland, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Edmonds who will talk about their mission, safety issues and how to use communications on the water for everyone's benefit. Pizza and refreshments at 6:30, speaker at 7:00. We will also have plenty of fishing reports from those who have been out ling cod and halibut fishing.
The weekend of June 5th & 6th also brings about our Annual Open House and Kid's fishing pond, all part of the Edmonds Waterfront Festival. The hatchery will be open from 10:00 to 4:00 both Saturday and Sunday for the fish pond and hatchery tours. Be sure to tell your friends and relatives to come on down with the kids for a great time and if you have a few hours to help, that would be great as well.

You may have noticed that we experimented with changing the look of the website for the last month and it has been decided to return to the original layout. It seems to be more clear and easier to follow. If you have comments either way we would appreciate those.

2010 Awards Banquet and Auction

Thank you to everyone who participated in our Annual Awards Banquet and Auction. We had a beautiful evening to share everyone's company and have a good time. We may have even made a little money to support the Willow Creek Hatchery and our other endeavors.
Congratulations to Ray Crawford and Gary Dawson for being awarded the Distinguished Service Award for all the work they do for us and to John Hjort and Walter Thompson for winning the President's Award. The Plaques will be updated and hung back in our awards case at the Hatchery. We also wanted to share a couple pictures taken during the evening last night.

Our speaker this will will be John Abbot, South Puget Sound's 'Captain Downriggin' claiming the deadliest Custom Tied Hoochies on the planet. John will share an hours worth of tips and tricks on downrigger fishing in the Puget Sound.
Another reminder that we will be holding our annual Awards Banquet and Auction on May 1st at the South County Senior Center in Edmonds. Please plan to attend and participate. It is an enjoyable evening with old friends and new alike and also one of our important fund raisers for the year. Our next general meeting will be Wednesday February 24th. Jeff June will give a presentation on his latest work in the process of removing derelict fishing gear and lost crab traps from the Puget Sound. We will have pizza available at 6:30 and the meeting will start at 7:00 at the South Snohomish Senior Center in Edmonds.

We have also finalized the date for the annual Edmonds Chapter TU Awards Banquet and Auction. This is one of our big fundraisers of the year and hope to get a big turnout this year. Fish ready to move to pond

Needed a lot of help to get the pond ready to receive the new fry that are in the holding trays. It was a nice day and lots of volunteers showed up to clean the pond as it was lowered and then refilled to take the 80,000 new coho that will reside there for the next few months until they are ready to be transfered to the various steams that feed into Lake Washington from the north.

Fish moved from Incubators to holding trays

The 80,000 fish that have been in the incubators since the end of December were moved into the holding trays on February 13th. They will remain in these trays inside the hatchery until they are ready to move to the pond on February 20th. In the pictures above the trays from the incubators are moved from their vertical stacks to the holding trays for further acclimation to the stream water and a larger area to support their increased size

General Meeting January 27th

Don't forget the first General meeting of the year at the Senior Center in Edmonds, this Wednesday the 27th at 7:00 PM. We will have a guest speaker from Puget Sound Anglers to talk about the North of Falcon season setting process among other things.

I wanted to also thank those of you who showed up Saturday morning to help assemble and launch the net pen for yet another season. We will keep you posted when the pen will be stocked and moved into position inside the Edmonds Fishing Pier. The eggs are also doing very well and will be moved into the pond within the next 2-3 weeks.

Congratulations to Walter Thompson and Mark Wilbert for being award winners at the Winter WCTU meeting on January 9th. Walter won the Aquatic Education Award and Mark Wilbert the Conservationist of the Year.
It's good to see that year's of hard work are recognized.

Annual State TU Meeting in Olympia

The next WCTU Council meeting is scheduled for January 8th & 9th at the Tumwater Comfort Inn Conference Center.
It will start on Friday afternoon with a gathering for presidents, committee meetings and an Executive Board meeting. On Saturday we will have a key note address by Congressman Norm Dicks and a panel discussion on the Chehalis Basin Flood Planning. The panelists will be Thurston, Lewis and Grays Harbor County Commissioners and WDFW. We will also spend the afternoon with chapter reports and presentations and a round table discussion on topics that are chosen by the chapter presidents. We will also be having our annual awards presentation.
The council would like to encourage all TU members to attend. Whether you go down for the entire meeting or part of the day on Saturday it would be appreciated and we hope educational.

General Meeting moved to Wednesday Nov. 18th

The general meeting as been moved up a week to the 18th so as not to conflict with Thanksgiving. Our guest speaker will be Mark Baltzell with WDFW. Mark’s primary duties within the agency are coordinating and conducting mark-selective fishery studies for Chinook. We have 4 of those fisheries ongoing in our area right now (Marine Areas 9, 10, 8.1 and 8.2). Mark will talk about those, and summer fisheries, and results from these fisheries since 2005.

General Meeting Tonight October 28th

We will have two speakers, to talk about smoking and preserving fish and the other is our local WDFW officer for everyone to meet and greet and get his take on what is happening on the local waters that is of concern to the Dept of Fisheries. As usual we will also have another great raffle.

Willow Creek bank reconstruction 10/4/2009

A recent early fall rainstorm caused some of the logs that were reinforcing the east bank of Willow Creek to become dislodged. Several volunteers worked to move the logs back into position, reinforce with stainless steel cables and a bunch of heavy rocks. The work should help to keep the stream in it's banks during the upcoming rainy season we always get in the late fall and early winter.

Thanks to John Hjort for all of his hard work in organizing the food for our barbeque. He and Larry Clure did most of the work of cooking for the rest of us to enjoy. We had a good turnout but certainly would love to see those of you who couldn't make this year, next year. The grounds of the Hatchery are in great shape, thanks to the Halls and if you get a chance feel free to stop by and tour the grounds and the Willow Creek restoration.

The Edmonds Laebugten Salmon Chapter of TroutUnlimited is having our annual summer barbeque at the Willow Creek Hatchery on Wednesday night July 15th starting at 6:00 PM.We would like to encourage all members to come visit the hatchery if you haven't been here for awhile. Don Hall has done a tremendous job of keeping the grounds looking wonderful.We would also like to be able to welcome the new members that have joined us from the Mukilteo and Ballard Chapters that have been closed. We look forward to meeting you and hope that you will be able to attend this fun event. This event is also for your family to attend as well.

WHO ARE WE?
We are recreational salmon & freshwater fishermen. Most of us consider Puget Sound our backyard. You can find us fishing the Edmonds shoreline, Possession Bar, Point-No-Point, Eglon, Admiralty Inlet, Jefferson Head, area lakes & streams throughout the year
The Edmonds Laebugten Salmon Chapter, based in Edmonds, is affiliated with the Washington Council of Trout Unlimited (the state wide entity & all other TU Chapters) and the national organization of TU. The Laebugten portion of our name is a Norwegian word meaning "quiet cove" and pronounced "lah-boot-n".
On the 4th Wednesday of each month, we meet at 7:00 pm at the South County Senior Center, 220 Railroad Ave, Edmonds (one block south of the Edmonds Ferry Terminal). Our meetings routinely include a guest speaker, a member fishing report, raffle drawing, refreshments etc.
Activities include Club derbies, sponsorship of sport & fly fishing schools, participation in the Edmonds Waterfront Festival (our Open House & Kids Fishing Pond), Edmonds Fishing Pier Coho Net Pen, the Willow Creek Hatchery (formerly known as Deer Creek Hatchery), various other enhancement projects, elementary school education classes and our annual awards banquet held each spring.
OUR PURPOSE
Our chapter was started in 1974 by seventeen concerned sport fisherman in response to an obviously diminishing salmon resource and inequitable allocation of the resource to the recreational fisherman. Our purposes are:
1. To preserve and protect the cold water resource
2. To work with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and other interested groups to enhance the salmon stocks of Puget Sound
3. To advocate for more equitable allocation of the non-treaty portion of the salmon resources to the recreational salmon fisherman through realignment, relocation and reduction in the commercial gear on Puget Sound, the straits of Juan de Fuca and in the North Pacific
4. To promote a more viable recreational salmon fishery in Puget Sound, especially Marine areas 8, 9 and 10.
OUR SOLUTIONS
We raise salmon. We raise awareness. We actively participate in salmon politics. Our projects not only add salmon to the Puget Sound for the benefit of all but serve to educate kids, parents and the general public in our community.
Annually since 1979, we have sponsored a Coho net pen rearing project under the Edmonds Fishing Pier. We raise 30,000 Coho smolts for several months until they imprint on the local waters. Instead of migrating long distances, a number of them become residents of the Puget Sound. Survivors return as mature adults to the Edmonds Fishing Pier and creeks along the Edmonds shoreline.
Our largest project is the Willow Creek Hatchery. After years of fund-raising and contributions by many, we built the Willow Creek Hatchery in 1985. It is one of the largest privately maintained and volunteer operated hatcheries in the State of Washington. Under the supervision of the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, we have successfully raised and out-planted an average of 100,000 high-quality salmon each year.
Since 1990, we have out-planted over 2,250,000 Coho fry into Scriber Creek, Swamp Creek, North Creek, Boeing Creek and Edmonds area watersheds. Hundreds of Edmonds and Shoreline Districts’ elementary school students have participated in Willow Creek Hatchery/Edmonds Fishing Pier field trips.

It takes a lot of community support and volunteer effort to sustain our enhancement projects. Edmonds/Laebugten’s primary source of funding comes from our Annual Awards Night Banquet and Auction.
